Part 1: Commitments
Part 1: The Real Commitments Behind “I’m Committed”
What does the word commitment mean to you?
Merriam-Webster’s Definition is: an agreement or pledge to do something in the FUTURE.
When it comes to the world of college recruiting, we relate the word to the day a student athlete commits to play the sport they love at their school of choice. In reality, you’re committing to so much more:
Academic Commitments
Maintain NCAA/School GPA requirements through consistent academic performance to stay eligible.
Attend study halls & tutoring, often mandatory for first-year athletes.
Balance class schedules, assignments, and exams with your practice, training, and game schedule.
Choose a Major and develop long-term goals.
Athletic Commitments
Understand you are now competing at a higher level against top-tier athletes.
Attend in-season and off-season practices, including early mornings and weekends.
Complete year-round strength and conditioning programs.
Engage in team meetings, film sessions, and scouting. Be coachable.
Devote time to injury prevention and recovery. Attend treatment sessions and stay on top of your athletic trainers’ instructions.
Adapt to changing roles and be team focused.
Social & Personal Commitments
Adapt to the independence of living away from home, often for the first time.
Follow team and school conduct codes, behavior policies, and expectations.
Represent the school and athletic program with maturity. Athletes are public figures on and off campus.
Navigate college life and social situations while maintaining focus on your goals.
These are some of the key commitments every new student-athlete must embrace—all while keeping an eye on your long-term goals and preparing for life after sports.
You will be a professional, whether it’s in a sport or a career, your commitment to your future starts TODAY! Start building your network of coaches, alumni, and teammates that will often open future doors.
Part 2 of the series will focus on the effort, discipline and daily habits needed BEFORE that commitment offer ever comes.
If you are ready to take the next step in your recruiting process, you're in the right place.
